Firekeeper Golf Course
Firekeeper Golf Course is not actually located here in Topeka it is off of 150th St. in Mayetta. The golf course is right on your way to the Prairie Band Casino, for those who are familiar. This golf course is on a completely different level than any course around the area. The greens, fairways, teeboxes, and bunkers are all in pristine condition. The fairway grass at Firekeeper seems to be like most of the greens at any course (very short and well kept up). But with the beauty of the course also comes the beast. And by beast I am referring to the price of a round of golf out there and also the difficulty. It is by far one of if not the most difficult courses I have ever played. With all of the long thick native grasses growing along the sides of most of the fairways the wind is also a huge factor playing Firekeeper. But if you enjoy golfing and don't mind spending a little money and losing a few or 5 balls then Firekeeper is the one. I would recommend Firekeeper Golf Course to anyone around the area.

Forbes Golf Course
Forbes Golf Course is not very well known around Topeka but is located off Capehart Rd on the southwest side. Forbes is the only course around here that is only a nine hole course. It is also a little off of the beaten path so not too many people are usually out there. The course overall is not one of the best I have played it was in a rough condition. The one thing about Forbes is that it is not a terribly difficult play most of the holes are fairly straight and there is only water on a couple holes. Forbes is a good course to go to to work on your game and get prepared for the bigger and better courses around Topeka. Overall not a bad course just one that is not very well known.

Shawnee Country Club
Shawnee Country Club has been through a lot of ups and downs over the past 5-10 years. The golf course is located off the corner of 29th and Adams on the southeast part of town. The country club recently switched owners to the Great Life Association after a couple years that it was shut down. The course is still very much a work in progress with a lot of different parts of the course getting worked on. The course used to be one of the nicest courses around Topeka until the ownership issues. The course although it looks rough in a couple places here and there has an excellent layout and is a challenging course. One of the most challenging parts about golfing there is finding your ball in the thick rough. But in the long run if we keep getting summers like the last one Shawnee Country Club will be back to being in discussion for the best course in Topeka.

Lake Shawnee Country Club
Lake Shawnee Country Club is located off of East Edge Rd. also here in Topeka. The course layout is designed right around the south side of the lake. One of the only holes you really have to worry about the lake coming into play is hole #2 (the lake lines the entire left side of the hole). Arguably this is one of the most beautiful challenging holes around Topeka. Another noteworthy hole at Lake Shawnee is #4. This hole is a par 3 only measuring about 150 yds or less but with almost a one hundred foot drop from the teebox to the green. The greens are also very challenging because of the hills some of them are on creating difficult chances for low scores. Every part of the course teeboxes to the fairways to the greens were kept in great shape. Although Lake Shawnee is not the easiest course around Topeka I would recommend it to any golf lover around here who wants a challenging beautiful venue.

Berkshire Country Club
As I said in my previous post about Prairie View, Berkshire was the course I played at all the time when I was younger. I started taking my first lessons here at age 5, but enough on that time for the course. Berkshire Country Club is located here off of 45th St on the south side of Gage. Berkshire has remained mostly the same since I played there in my youth, aside from a tree or two missing. All in all the course is very popular to people around here and gets good reviews. For me the greens were the best part of the course, they were rolling really nice and true, which made putting difficult. The fairways were just average for around here there were spots where there was no grass and the ground looked pretty rough, but for around here that is almost expected. The tee boxes were in pretty good condition aside from a few that you could maybe break your ankle if not watching your step. Berkshire does not really have any bodies of water that come into play but if you can't hit the ball straight the trees or someone's backyard could come into play for you. Berkshire is pretty similar to Western Hills if I had to compare courses. Berkshire Country Club is a good place for golf but wouldn't be my first choice in courses around the area.

Prairie View Country Club
Prairie View golf course is located off of 45th and Auburn Rd. here in Topeka. Prairie View was one of the first golf courses I learned to play at back when I was young. In the fifteen or so years since I first went not much has changed. The course is just not in great condition at all. The tee boxes aren't in terrible condition but the fairway's on the other hand, they were in pretty awful condition. The reason I say the fairways are terrible is because of the spotty bumps almost everywhere on the course. They also don't really have a cart path at all for the carts. The greens were looking good on the other hand and rolled pretty well. But the course is a tough course if you haven't played there before because of blind shots and and the rough ground. But if you want to go work on your game it wouldn't be a bad place to learn at because there usually aren't that many people out there. Although the course is looking a little rough it has a nice serene feel when you play there and that's always good for your game.

Cypress Ridge Golf Course
Cypress Ridge is located off of Urish Rd. here in Topeka. The course when I golfed there when I was young was called Topeka Public Golf Course but renamed years ago. Again as I said in my prior post the weather did wonders for the courses this year. Cypress Ridge is in great condition this year. From the tee boxes to the fairways to the greens everything is in supreme condition. At Cypress there is little room for error with water coming into play on five of the eighteen holes, depending how you hit it. There are also a couple holes lined with thick native grasses growing wild. Even though the course is difficult it is a must play. In my opinion it is one of the top three courses around Topeka. Some of my only negative feedback from the course was the bunkers could have looked a little better and that there were a bunch of ball marks unfixed on the greens. But you can attribute the second one to laziness and lack of respect for the course from players. Overall if you enjoy golfing, you can't go wrong with Cypress Ridge.

Western Hills Golf Course
Western Hills is a nice 18 hole course here in Topeka located off of 21st and Auburn Rd. I have been golfing here the most of any other place I will be blogging about. This summer we saw some beautiful weather and it definitely helped the course out a lot. But no course is perfect, their bunkers were getting some work done to them when I was out there because of the awful shape they were in. Other than a few spots where worms were eating at the greens they were looking pretty good but rolled slow. The fairways and tee boxes were in good condition again aside from a few unexpected dead spots. But overall I enjoy golfing out there because it is a challenging course, if you can't hit your ball straight. Also Western has some good easy holes because of the length of the course, which isn't terribly long.

I started golfing at the ripe young age of five when my grandparents who were avid golfers themselves signed me up for the Junior Golf program at Berkshire Country Club. There I took lessons a couple days a week and learned a lot about the game of golf. My grandparents were also a huge part in learning the up and downs of the game and also how to play the game right. I have been golfing all around Topeka for my entire life and know the courses around here pretty well. In this blog I will tell about many of the courses around the area such as the Great Life courses and others like Cypress Ridge, Lake Shawnee, and others. I could even throw in a teaching point or two on how to hit some specific shots.
